Sermon for Shushan Purim March 2008
by Rabbi Geoffrey Hyman
Being Shushan Purim today I thought I would give a different type of sermon!
An Ode to Purim
The story of Purim so gladdens our hearts; with all its great details,
playing their fine part.
With Haman his lots, to him unknown; he’d end up on the gallows, his plot
so blown.
Zeresh – his wife, warns him so: “if you start with the Jews, it’ll be you
to go!”
But alas, his wife – just like his boss; is just part of the show, so he
let her go.
The Jews from the start - prayed with all their hearts; hoping that G-d,
would take their part.
With much at stake and hamentaschen to make; Mordechai announced, to the
gates we must haste.
With sackcloth and prayer he girded his affair; joined with his flock, all
did they bear.
G-d that day did hear their prayer; for soon thereafter, Mordechai heard
that pair so chatter.
A plot to kill the king he heard; let’s make haste, and let’s not be
scared.
A king relieved but soon forgot – but it stood the time when there was the
plot.
Queen Esther, on her throne was able to be bold;
“My people in danger the king must be told”.
A party all scheduled for the macher himself; oblivious, did he not know
it would be bad for his health?
Upon the sacred bed of the wed did he fall; alas all’s finished: “off with
his head!
With Haman and his sons all hanging so high; now it was time: “let’s save
Jewish lives”.
To battle they went to defend their great worth; to victory did He lead
them, to preserve their future births.
With the enemies defeated, their work completed – to Torah and feasting –
they were ready to be treated.
So now my friends let us rejoice; and let us always remember, to raise our
mighty voice.
