The Ilford United Synagogue has appointed David Rome to be part time
Chazan at the Shul. Mr. Rome has been assisting Rabbi I.G. Hyman in
conducting the Services for some time now and his appointment recognises
the great enjoyment that the community has from his singing of the Shabbat
and Yom Tov tunes.
David, 21 years old, has become an accomplished Chazan combining his
academic studies at University College London and Cantorial training with
Cantor Stephen Robbins. He also teaches at Hasmonean High School in
Hendon, and is one of the soloists with the London Cantorial Singers, who
perform both nationally and internationally. He is the grandson of the
late Rabbi Yehudah Rockman, who was Rabbi of Catford and Bromley United
Synagogue for 44 years.
David said of his appointment: “I am delighted to have been appointed part
time Chazan at this prestigious Synagogue, which boasts 1,200 members. As
the youngest Cantor in the United Synagogue movement, I am pleased to work
with the wonderful Synagogue Choir in enhancing the beauty of Services
within the framework of the traditional modes of prayer, interlaced with a
modern musical outlook.”
Rabbi Hyman says: “We are delighted that David has joined our team. He is
an excellent Chazan with an outstanding knowledge of the Nussach,
combining both traditional and modern melodies. His presence enhances our
Services greatly, and I hope he will be with us for many years.”
A Shul spokesman said: “This marks another step in the revitalisation of
the Synagogue and the community.”
