YAD VASHEM PAGES OF TESTIMONY

Over the past 50 years, Yad Vashem has been working to recover the names of
the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust. To date only about 3
million names are memorialized in Yad Vashem's Central Database of Holocaust
victims.
To commemorate and bear witness to the lives of our murdered brethren, Yad
Vashem has created what they term, Pages of Testimony. These forms were
created for registering the names of those who perished in the Holocaust.
Each Page of Testimony contains a victim's name, biographical details, and a
photograph when available.
Millions of victims remain unidentified and Yad Vashem has put out an urgent
call to the World Jewish Community to recover their names through a
worldwide Names Recovery Project. This is a race against time, before
those who remember the victims are no longer with us.
Our Society realises the great importance of the Names Recovery Project and
feels that we are in a good position to publicise this project for the
foreseeable future.
You can help in various ways:
The first thing everyone can do is to check their own family trees and
identify any Holocaust victims. If we have Holocaust victims on our tree,
we need to ensure that a Page of Testimony has been filled out for each and
every person.
The second thing we can do is to mention the Names Recovery Project to
everyone we know, especially to those who might not be involved in
genealogy, but who may have Holocaust victims in their families.
Thirdly, because we genealogists are good at capturing 'Vital Data', we
could help others fill in the Pages of Testimony.
The steps one needs to carry this out are as follows:
1. Identify the name of a Holocaust victim.
2. Check the database of Holocaust victims names, which is available on
line, to see whether a Page of Testimony has already been filled out for
that person or child. Remember that unless someone has specifically filled
out a Page of Testimony for a particular person, it will not be in this
Database. The Pages of Testimony Project was started in the 1950s so one
may find a record for a family member already filled in and submitted in the
1950s by another family member, friend, or neighbour of the victim.
3. If no record is found in the database, fill in a page or each and
every person and submit it to Yad Vashem, either on line or by regular mail.
The Database of Holocaust victim's names can be accessed via the Yad Vashem
website at www.yadvashem.org
Blank Pages of Testimony forms with full
instructions on how to fill them in can also be downloaded from the same
website.
